A squire was a young man apprenticed to a knight. His duties included taking care of his master's war horse and armaments. Whilst serving their knights, squires learned the principles of knighthood, and also received training in the art of warfare.

When a squire's preparation is complete, he may be knighted at a ceremony where the King rests his royal sword lightly upon his shoulder.
