The Scottish claymore is one of the most recognizable swords in history. A hand-and-a-half style of sword, first appearing at the beginning of the sixteenth Century, it is almost certainly a development of the Scots-Irish single hand style of sword. The two-handed claymore was a large sword used in the Medieval period. It was used in the constant clan warfare and border fights with the English from circa 1300 to 1700. It was somewhat smaller than other two-handed swords of the era. The two-handed claymore seems to be an adaptation of Early Scottish medieval swords which had developed a distinctive style of a cross-hilt with down sloping arms that ended in spatulate swellings.
The Highland is a hard and rough place in the north of Scotland. Not surprisingly such hard land produced one of the fiercest and proudest warriors in history: the Highlanders.
