Ragnar – The Viking Warlord’s Sword
Legend
In 845, Ragnar Lodbrok had quickly become known for his deadly force and his power. He would attack cities on feast days when would all be in church celebrating. Ragnar would plunder each city and then allow his victims to live by accepting large payments, often no less than 7,000 pounds in silver. Fear was quickly spread throughout the land of the famous warlord and his deadly sword. Victims would cry out in fear when they saw Ragnar approach their city with his sword in hand.
History
Created in the 9th century this sword length is 92 cm. This blade is known to be one of the heaviest swords of the Viking age. Twisted silver and copper wire separates two rows of decoration found on the pommel. The pommel is made up of four lobes. A single beaded silver wire separates two of the smaller lobes.
These blades had deep fullers. The fuller increased the strength and flexibility of the sword while reducing the weight. This allowed the wielder to swing faster, harder strokes while allowing the sword to bend but not break when hitting bone.
