What is LARP ?
Live Action Role Playing, otherwise known as LARP is a role-playing game where a character’s actions are physically and mentally acted out. Within each LARP game setting a variety of instruments and weapons are used in order to successfully complete each game.
The most used LARP combat system within games is called a simple locational hit system. All characters have the same number of locations; 5 - body, both arms and both legs. Each time that a character is struck they lose one hit and that location stops working. During role-play when a location is struck, that location is now to be considered non-existent. This style of fighting encourages good role-playing while fighting and effective parrying and striking. It is vital to remember that fighting is only conducted within the actual character areas.
Types of LARP Weapons
There are different types of weapons available for use for LARP fighting. The three most popular styles of weapons are boffer, latex and foam.
1-Boffer
Boffer weapons are typically constructed by wrapping a solid core (such as PVC or graphite) with some form of padding (such as closed-cell foam pipe insulation). Open-cell foam can also be added for thrusting and waylay tips. The foam is then generally covered with duct or other similar tape, cloth, or in some cases with a latex coating.
2-Latex Weapons
Latex weapons are typically manufactured by a molding process that allows for a more realistic looking weapon. Not all LARPs allow the use of latex weapons due to the fact that they tend to be a bit harder than traditional boffer weapons and are not constructed in a manner to typically be safe for thrusting.
3-Foam Weapons: The new generation
Foam weapons offer many advantages compared to latex and boffer weapons. These are a few of the characteristics that specifically differentiate foam from latex weapons:
- Spectacular realism
- Durability in extreme combat conditions
- Weather resistant
- Very safe.
